I guess I’ve always thought of them as the physical manifestations of the talismans that protect us, keep us safe from harm and appease the often angry gods. Symbols of our ancestors, portraits of those gone from this world, but locked firmly in our hearts, part of the very fabric of that we are made from. Tattoos are constant reminders, notes to self sent from centuries before in the wise words of a scribe, scholar or simple country girl dreaming of Mr. Right. Words mark the memory of the soul set free, numbers tell the time marked here on Earth, bound to the ground, not yet free to soar.
