It is always such a wonderful thing to see someone really embrace themselves

I tried a different pose, one looking straight towards the viewer and making eye contact. I think his added smile was a great touch, and allowed his personality to shine through and connect with the viewer. Again its like his pose and expression resembles listening to the viewer in conversation, it creates somewhat of an interaction and intimacy between the model and the viewer, which is something that I am interested in maybe incorporating into my assignment piece. To create a direct connection through eye contact could add to the female gaze I want to push within my work. In so many traditional portraits of women they make eye contact with the viewer in order to make them seem guilty of their nakedness for being so self aware. So this can be a take on that but with more of a positive spin, personifying that act of being self aware. Although my model isn’t completely naked, he is in a vulnerable position of just being in his underwear, so to have such a positive response to his situation, which did take him time to get used to, adds to this positivity of being happy and confident in ones own skin.

I wish I can show this in real life because it was more interesting to see the installation in the rooms and my posters worked very well as an exhibition in the flat

In this installation, I’m showing the best project of my second year at uni. I chose this project because I’m the proudest of this work I’ve done this year. I wanted to show my lockdown life, it’s been a very difficult year for everyone. I haven’t left Glasgow for 8 months now and sometimes I feel my flat is a trap. My posters make more life in this flat/lockdown life. I like the harsh reality on some of the pictures, dirty plates, or the messy room. It really shows the uni and lockdown life.

I have continued additional nature and natural aspects within my paintings because that is what I imagine my reality would be like without men

I dream of just going into nature or the woods and being naked with the nature or with other women, without obviously fearing being molested. The last painting where the women is sitting on a flower in the night time is sacred to me, because night time is usually the scariest for women, that is when we won’t be going out of our homes unless its a well lit area with lots of people around. I think about what I would do during the night if there were no fear of men.

I think this project’s theme had progressed into something that was more about me and less about the idea of protection itself

It depicts the conflict with myself and the need for comfort, touch and being with the people I have a connection with during a very stressful time. It evolved into my own personal desire to be protected and shielded, without the means to. I thought it would be good to use all the relevant work I had made in the final stages of the project and compiled them into one piece.

Concrete witnesses of a fallen dream, a hope for equality and better life, an urban utopia, are still standing and very well a part of the everyday life of citizens… at least for now

Many scholars have examined the ideology of the socialist take-over that happened in Eastern Europe after the Second World War. In the Balkans specifically (which will be my main area of interest here, as I have lived there for a few years), where more than half of the population was rural, a need to boost the industrial sector meant forced urbanization and massive migration towards the cities. Hence the erection of apartment blocks to house the incoming population. From capitals cities to provincial towns, prefabricated blocks were built and now dotted the urban landscape. Academic works (see bibliography below) detail the plans conceived to build even more, and even faster, as one of socialism’s failures in Southeastern Europe (and presumably everywhere else) was to live up to the promise of providing housing of equal and good standards to everyone.

This is my artwork, my intellectual property and my blood, sweat, and tears for years

The piece begins as a blank wall of statements that may be part of identity. Participants select a color of yarn to represent them and wrap it around each statement that identifies them. No statements contradict, some are simple and many are challenging. Intersections between people and patterns become apparent in the weaving. Each person leaves their yarn with its anchoring stone as a mark of their identity as a part of this complex Identity Tapestry which is itself a portrait of that particular group of people in that time and place.

Layers in narrative are quite similar to unfolding

It’s about what follows and what unfolds within process. Yet, some works are layered using objects I draw (or paint). Often, I reach times when I don’t know what to do next. Then I don’t know and don’t want to pause the creative process – I make something. I draw objects and anything that comes to mind. Most of them never see the light of the day, but some of them come to life and get to feature in some animations.
